President Clinton Proclaims November 15th as America Recycles Day

America Recycles Day is entering its third year. Last year saw phenomenal growth in participation over the inaugural America Recycles Day of 1997. More than 2 million Americans participated in 4,143 events in 44 states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, and the U.S. Virgin Islands. That is a 180-percent increase over the 750,000 participation level of 1997!

The 1998 American Green Dream House winner was Ms. Lori McKee of Providence, Rhode Island. Our 1997 house winner, Sgt. First Class Robert Portillo, is about to take possession of his new home in Copperas Grove, Texas. Other selected highlights from 1998:

  • more than 100 television stories about ARD were aired in 35 of the top 50 markets;
  • 1,229 newspaper articles about ARD were published; and
  • programs from Hawaii to Rhode Island and from Utah to Texas reported increases in their recycling collections.

We are continuing the tradition of awarding a grand prize of the American Green Dream House with a slight modification. The next house will be awarded in December 2000. Participants in 1999 America Recycles Day events will be able to fill out and submit pledge cards that will be entered into the Year 2000 drawing. In addition, families of children who enter in 1999 will be eligible for the following prizes to be awarded in December of this year:

  • 25 remanufactured computers for donation to a school of the winner's choice, and a computer for the winner's own use, computers donated by Resource Concepts, Incorporated;
  • Resource Concepts, Inc.
  • a trip for 4 to the Walt Disney World Resorts (3 days/2 nights) including hotel accommodations at the Yacht & Beach Club Resort, and 8 Walt Disney World Theme Park passes, provided by the Walt Disney World Company. Four airline tickets will be provided by Solid Waste Association of North America.
  • In two short years, America Recycles Day has generated renewed public enthusiasm for recycling. With your continued support, this unique partnership of federal, state, local, business, and nonprofit organizations will exceed last year's performance. We look forward to your involvement and ever higher levels of performance in 1999.

    Thank you, in advance, for making America Recycles Day 1999 a success.
